We all need food to fuel our body. And this fuel is measured in terms of calories. As a rule of thumb, the more active is the lifestyle you live, the more fuel or calories you need.
If you think of your body as an engine, the harder it works or the longer it travels, the more fuel it needs to burn. And so athletes need more than just the recommended daily amount for normal people to keep them going on the field.
Unfortunately, many athletes still don't appreciate this fact, and therefore miss out on their needed calorie intake. That's why I have these softball nutrition tips for you to make sure you're getting the proper nutrition to keep you at the top of your game.
Never Skip Breakfast
At the risk of sounding like you mother, I tell you not to skip your breakfast because, it's true, it's the most important meal of the day.
You see, you don't consume anything in between dinner and breakfast (assuming you're not taking midnight snacks which I don't recommend), and so most of your energy reserves have already been used up at night to help repair your body and perform the most basic bodily functions.
And so when you miss breakfast, you're starving your body of the fuel it needs to get you through most of the morning at least. When this happens, you'll feel lethargic and you'll be unable to perform as well as you should during practice and even when you're doing normal activities.
Be Well-Hydrated
You also need water to keep you going. As an athlete, dehydration is one of your biggest enemies. And so you must prevent yourself from getting dehydrated even before it happens. Take regular sips of water or sports drinks to keep your fluid levels normal. Don't wait until you feel thirsty because it means that you're already dehydrated by that time.
Have Enough Supply of Carbohydrates
The main fuel that your body uses is carbohydrates. It burns quickly and so your body can use it immediately and at any time your body needs carbs.
So before a game, I recommend that you eat foods rich in carbohydrates which include wheat bread, corn flakes, and rice.
While I recommend carbs, I would discourage you from eating fatty foods before a game. While fat can also be used as a fuel by the body, it's slow burning, making it an inefficient fuel. More than that, eating fatty foods prior to a game will make you feel lethargic and it greatly decreases your reaction times. In short, fatty foods have a negative effect on your game.
So let's have a quick summary of what I just told you here. First, you should never skip breakfast. Your body's energy levels are low in the morning after an entire night of you not taking anything, so your body needs to refuel again. And you only do that by taking breakfast.
Then, you should always be well-hydrated. Don't wait until you get thirsty, because everything's too late by them.
And finally, eat carbohydrate-rich foods to keep you well fueled during the game. Your body likes carbs for intense physical activities because it's a fuel that burns quickly.
